Community Highlight: The Chronicles of Tyria are Looking for a New Writer

Word is going out through the community; the blog "Chronicles of Tyria" (disclosure: I am one of the co-editors of the site in addition to my writing here at Divinity's Reach) is now recruiting a new writer! Details after the break:

Salutations, Tyrians!

The blog, Chronicles of Tyria, due to overwhelming demand for more content, is now looking to recruit a single writer to contribute to the mythology and fiction being built at the site. This is a long-term position, with significant potential to get your name and work out into the Guild Wars 2 community in addition to being able to steer your own writing project into the foreseeable future.

Qualities that we're looking for in applicants:

  • Excellent English spelling and grammar. We have a large number of international readers; Chronicles of Tyria's founder actually speaks French as a first language. But we are first, and foremost, an English-language site, and anyone wanting to join the writing team must have a sturdy grasp of written English.
  • Self-motivated and hardworking. You will be expected to contribute at least one part of the chapter to your story, per week; our current authors shoot for roughly two per week. This is a significant commitment and requires an author that is capable of both a sustained, high standard of work, and consistency in that standard.

  • Knowledge of Guild Wars lore. You will be writing original fiction based upon the world of Tyria. While you won't be expected to know the entire GW1 wiki forwards and backwards, you need to have at least a working knowledge of the history and cultures of the world that you will be working in.

  • A passion for both writing and Guild Wars 2. It's simple really; these are the motivations that started our project, that will continue to direct our growth over time, and that are shared among all the members of our team.

Guidelines for submissions:

  • Must be original work. No plagiarism, multiple authorship, copying, etc. It must be your work, and your work alone.

  • Must be in the form of a first-person narrative. Any form of narrative is acceptable; however, it must be written from the perspective of a single character, who the author will write and develop over the course of the project.

  • Must concern a Sylvari character. CoT is looking to breed diversity in the stories that we feature on our website. Considering that both a Human-elementalist author and a Charr-necromancer author are already on staff, we would like to branch into new races and professions. Exceptional submissions from Norn or Asura viewpoints will also be accepted, but our weighting system will favor Sylvari submissions.

  • Must be at least 2,000 words. A proper, chapter-length submission will be roughly this word-count; so you can expect the writing of your submission to reflect the amount of work that will be required for each chapter.

Prompt:
  • Introduce your character to the readership in approximately 2,000 words. Either a prologue to the story that you will pursue, or the first chapter of said story, will be acceptable.

There will be three rounds of elimination:

Round 1 will consist of an individual review of your work by the staff of CoT. If you are selected to proceed to round two, a critique of your work will be returned to you and a short period will be given for the critique to be utilized in the creation of a second-draft.
Round 2 will consist of further individual reviews. Authors who distinquish themselves in this round will have an individual interview with the staff of CoT, after which, a small pool of finalists will be chosen.
Round 3 will consist of the finalist authors' writings, which will be posted to the front page of CoT. A short period of open community voting will commence, at the end of which, a winner will be chosen.

Important Note: Victory in this endeavor is not necessarily exclusive. If we end with two, truly exceptional applicants at the end of the third round, CoT will consider extending invitations to both authors to join the writing team at CoT.

All submissions, questions, and the like, should be sent to contest@chroniclesoftyria.com The deadline for submissions will be May 30, 2012 at Midnight, EST.

Thank you for your interest in joining Chronicles of Tyria, we look forward to hearing from you in the weeks ahead!

May Dwayna bless you,
